RbC Training Overview

Our Approach

Our training approach is designed around three concepts.

First, students need to be instructed.  They need to receive and digest new information, understand principles and see the possibilities.

Second, students need time to imitate what they have learned.  Imitation ensures that they have correctly understood the information.  It also gives them a safe environment where they can be encouraged and received the best feedback.

Third, students are encouraged to innovate by applying the RbC method to their unique environment.

RbC is a method that works in a variety of situations requiring complex and/or urgent collaboration.  Project Managers will have one type of challenge.  Consultants will have another.  Leaders/Managers another.

RbC training makes RbC practical and applicable.  That is why our training consists of two phases!

 

Video Training

It begins with 10 videos that introduce students to the concepts of RbC facilitation.  This phase allows the students to become informed about every area of RbC facilitation.  Now that they have the information, they are ready to apply their new knowledge through imitation and explore ways to innovate it for themselves.

Each student views the videos, via the internet, before attending classroom training.  Students also receive a downloadable notes syllabus that they use during the video training.

Classroom Training

Next, the student attends classroom training.  This training includes knowledge transfer, role-playing, and group discussions.  It incorporates multiple interactions which engage students at both the head and heart level.

Each student will receive a RbC Journal to incorporate their notes and learning.  This Journal helps them capture the key portions of the training for later review and allows them to build a portfolio of approaches they can apply in their own RbC sessions.

The RbC training is both intense and energetic.  Students will be challenged to expand their emotional intelligence as they tackle the challenges of applying the new knowledge they have gained.

Students will create multiple RbC session designs both with others and alone.  They will work with others to do mini RbC sessions.

Who Should Take this Training?

RbC Training is designed for Project Managers, Consultants, Leaders, Managers, Organizational Development professionals and Facilitators.

Most anyone can facilitate a meeting.  But RbC is about something more.

RbC provides you the skills to work with multiple groups, divisions, departments or organizations to build engagement and achieve unity of action needs the skills taught in this class.

For example, our students regularly facilitate collaborative sessions that are complex and urgent. 

For example, two organizations exploring a merger. 
Or two religious denominations looking to work closely on an outreach. 
Or multiple non-profits seeking to address poverty in their metro area. 
Or multiple departments implementing a joint project.

RbC is not based on techniques for facilitation, it is guided by a Design Document created, in advance, by the RbC Facilitator and Session Sponsor.

 

Designing RbC Sessions

RbC is a facilitative method based upon principles, not techniques.  As such, it is guided by a “Design Document”, rather than in-the-moment facilitation techniques.

A Design Document is a detailed agenda created by the sponsor(s) of a session and the RbC facilitator well before the session itself. This Design Document ensures that the conversations and work done in the session will accomplish the goals and objectives set by the session sponsor(s).

RbC students gain the skills work closely with the session sponsor(s) to determine goals/objective and set proper expectations for a successful session.

Using this skills you will then be able to create a proper design to achieve those goals and objectives.

In the RbC training you will learn to :

  • Lead an efficient and effective Design Team Meeting with sponsors
  • Create a successful session Design Document with detail
  • Use the 6 P’s model to establish session objectives and expectations
  • Apply the key principles of the RbC Method (Attitudes and Action)
  • Embed the RbC Models to create a robust collaborative experience
  • Configure the best venue for your session
  • Determine the number and type of participants
  • Choose the types of Activities to achieve session outcomes
  • Sequence Activities for best group interactions
  • Create Assignments for each Activity
  • Select and prepare templates for group work
  • Leverage and apply RbC Kits to enhance standard session types

Facilitating RbC Sessions

Facilitating an RbC session is different from traditional facilitation.

Because it is based on a Design Document, the facilitator’s role is more that of a coach rather than a “process cop”.  That’s why RbC is not reliant on a specific personality type to be successful.  And the RbC Facilitator is able to achieve so much more.

The RbC Facilitator guides participants through the planned Activities previously defined in the Design Document.  Facilitators then monitor both individual and group interactions to make minor adjustments to improve the understanding of all participants.

RbC students learn when to stimulate creative thinking and when to focus workgroups on detailed action planning.  The result is they are able to draw out the best dialogue, engage everyone and elicit the best thinking from the group.

Their focus, as RbC Facilitators is supporting the RbC process rather than controlling the outcomes.

During RbC training students learn how to:

  • Create and manage workgroups in the Session
  • Manage various participant personalities
  • Incorporate the proper work/report rhythm for the session
  • Address common session killers
  • Guide emotional topics/conversations
  • Gather all viewpoints in a large group of 20 or more
  • Leverage Open and Closed questions
  • Create opportunities for emergence and “aha” thinking
  • Capture the content of the Session for later review
  • Reduce distractions and interruptions
  • Ensure participants achieve the objectives defined beforehand
